The History of Lorem Ipsum

While many assume that Lorem Ipsum is just a random sequence of letters, its origins trace back to the Roman Republic. Specifically, the text is extracted from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of Marcus Tullius Cicero's treatise on ethics, "De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (On the Ends of Good and Evil), composed in 45 BC.

Cicero's work was highly popular during the Renaissance and covers various theories of ethical philosophy. The passage reads:

"Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit..."
Translation: "Neither is there anyone who loves or pursues or desires to obtain pain of itself, because it is pain..."

In the early 1500s, an anonymous printer scrambled this passage of Cicero's work to create a specimen book for different typefaces. By removing, adding, and modifying various letters and words, the printer achieved a visual flow that resembles natural language without conveying actual meaning, preventing readers from focusing on the content rather than the layout.

Richard McClintock's Discovery

For centuries, the exact source of this scrambled Latin remained an enigma. In the late 20th century, Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, decided to investigate. He looked up the word "consectetur", which is relatively rare in classical literature, and tracked its occurrences.

McClintock discovered that the phrase comes directly from Cicero's ethical discourse. His research helped designers and developers appreciate that the standard dummy text we use daily is not mere modern gibberish, but is connected to classical humanistic philosophy.
